CLUB NIGHTS

We have two training nights each week, usually we only have a break around Christmas and the New Year, and these are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, at Sandyacres, starting at 07.00pm.

The Duty Coach will take the group through a supervised warm-up/stretching session which usually lasts about 20 minutes. After this a few minutes are spent on announcements covering the weekends results, various events coming up (both social and running), etc. The coach then sets a group session or gives direction with regard to the routes that should be followed for the evening run.

The runs vary according to the time of year and to the dictates of events that are coming up. Because of where we are based, adjacent to open countryside, we have the advantage of being able to use the countryside and its network of paths during the long summer evenings whereas during the winter months our runs are restricted to the town and surrounding area because of the availability of street lighting.

Group sessions take many forms. It could be speed work, hills, or stamina building. All are hard, most are enjoyable, but all, over time, are of great benefit.

On Thursday evenings there is also the opportunity to take part in supervised fitness training sessions which take the form of circuits involving stretching and weight exercises.

Whilst it is nice if all attending take part in the organised training it is not mandatory. If you have a need to do light work or just want to go out for an easy session that is up to you. Should you not wish to follow the route set by the Coach all we ask is that you notify the Coach of the route that you are taking.

We currently have three Coaches who have all attended coaching courses run by uk:athletics. They have an insight into training for all distances but their main forte is long distance coaching. We can and do cater for all levels of ability and you can be assured that we already have somebody at the Club whose ability will match yours.

Once the hard work is over, it usually lasts until 08.30pm depending on the time of year, changing facilities and showers are available as well as a well stocked bar.

In addition to the above there is a Monday night track session at the Julie Rose Stadium with a 07.30pm start at the track side. These take place on every Monday throughout the year except for Bank Holidays. The cost of these sessions amounts to £2.75 per night. All abilities are welcome, currently we have runners ranging from 35 minutes to 55 minutes for a 10k taking part. The sessions last around 60 minutes which includes a warm up and a warm down. More information can be obtained from Gary Sage or you can just turn up on a Monday evening.

During the winter months and occasionally during the summer, when it does not clash with a competitive event, there are Sunday morning runs organised by the Members. The distance of these varies but if you want to stretch your legs and don't want to run on your own this is an ideal opportunity.

Should you require a training program for a specific event that you are aiming at any one of the Coaches will be please to give you advice and discuss your particular requirements with you.
